What is a JavaScript for loop?

A for loop repeats a block of code while a condition is true. It is useful for counting, processing arrays, calculating totals and printing patterns.

for (let i = 1; i <= 5; i++) {
  console.log(i);
}

1. Initialization

let i = 1

Sets the starting value.

2. Condition

i <= 5

Checks whether the loop should continue.

3. Increment

i++

Increases the counter by one.

Beginner tip: Always check your starting value, condition and increment to avoid infinite loops.

Safety: Run only code you understand. This simple playground executes JavaScript in your browser page, not in an isolated sandbox. Avoid pasting untrusted code.

Test Your JavaScript Loop Knowledge

Choose an answer for each question and check your score.

1. How many times does this loop run?
for (let i = 0; i < 5; i++) { }
2. Which operator increases a variable by one?
3. Which condition prints numbers from 1 through 10?
4. What does i += 2 do?
5. Which statement exits a loop immediately?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between for and while loops?

A for loop is convenient when the counting or iteration steps are known. A while loop repeats as long as its condition remains true.

Can I use a for loop to iterate over an array?

Yes. You can use an index-based for loop to visit each array element, or use for...of when you want to iterate over values directly.

How can I avoid an infinite loop?

Make sure the loop condition can eventually become false and that the counter or other relevant state changes as expected.

Do I need to memorize all the solutions?

No. Understand initialization, conditions and updates, then practice writing your own solutions and testing different inputs.
